Mother's Day - May 10

Mother's Day is May 10. To celebrate and honor our mothers, we will do a special Mother's Day drawing. Three gifts will be drawn for especially picked out for our moms- you will love them! ! To enter the drawing, all mothers will put their name in during the Sunday School hour. In morning worship three names will be drawn for three winners. Don't miss out Mother's Day! Come to Sunday School for a chance to win!
“A mother is the truest friend we have, when trials heavy and sudden, fall upon us; when adversity takes the place of prosperity; when friends who rejoice with us in our sunshine desert us; when trouble thickens around us, still will she cling to us, and endeavor by her kind precepts and counsels to dissipate the clouds of darkness, and cause peace to return to our hearts.” Washington Irving

Quote For the Day

We must not be led to belive that the disciplines are for spiritual giants and hence beyond our reach, or for contemplatives who devote all their time to prayer and meditation.
Far from it. God intends the disciplines of the spiritual life to be for ordinary human beings; people who have jobs, who care for children, who must wash dishes and mow lawns.
In fact, the disciplines are best exercised in the midst of our normal daily activities.

Sermon Recap

Last Sunday we heard a powerful message on "A Mature Christian". There were some excellent points brought out that can benefit and encourage Christians on the path to maturity. Here are a few highlights of the sermon.

Immaturity:
Immaturity is the number one problem in marriage. Many times a simple solution to complex problems is to "grow up". Immature decisions and ways often get people in trouble.

God's will is for Christians to "Grow Up" Hebrews 6:1 "Therefore, leaving the discussion of the elementary principles of Christ, let us go on to perfection, not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God," God's desire is to grow and mature in Him.

What is Maturity? How do you know when you reach maturity?
Maturity has nothing to do with age, accomplishments, education or academic standing.

To be mature - attitude is what makes the difference. It has been said that character is what you are in the dark - when no one else is around. It is not important what man says about you, but what God says about you. Our attitude should be Christ-like and should be compared or measured alongside of God's Word - not others.

5 Marks of Maturity:

1. A mature person is positive under the pressures of life.

2. A mature person is sensitive to people.
They are concerned about the needs, cares and desires of others.

3. A mature person has mastered his mouth.
Self control comes from tongue control. Our words have the ability to build up or to tear down. To bring help and healing or harm and hurt.

4. Mature Christians are peacemakers, not trouble makers.
Peacemakers avoid arguing to get their point across, guard against hurt feelings or hurting others feelings. Peacemakers are not defensive, taking things personal, but seek the peace of others.
Selfishness is the first cause of conflict. God expects us to look beyond ourselves.
Judging others is the second cause of conflict. God alone sees and knows every circumstance. He alone is the judge.

5. A mature person is patient and prayerful.

This was a deep and powerful message that invites self examination. May we always strive to be mature in Christ and be a blessing to one another.

Communion This Sunday

Communion is a memorial of Jesus Christ's body being broken for sin and His blood being shed to atone for sin. The bread was broken to remember how Jesus Christ was broken. It does not become the literal body of our Lord but rather it SYMBOLIZES that body. The cup of juice is also a SYMBOL of Christ's blood . When you participate in its commemoration, you are testifying that Jesus Christ died for YOU and shed His blood for YOU. You are remembering what He did for YOU. Every time you partake of the elements in commemoration of that last supper, you are giving personal testimony that Jesus Christ rose from the dead and is alive today. That is of course what the gospel is a all about!

The message of the Lord's supper is one of SELF-EXAMINATION for the Christian. God doesn't want you to partake of the elements in the Lord's supper as if you are eating a normal meal. He wants you to me sober and praying to make sure everything is right between you and Him.

The main thing to remember is that this is a time for REMEMBRANCE .

1 Corinthians 11:23-26 (King James Version)

For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, that the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread:

And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me.

After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, this cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me.

For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord's death till he come.
