Complacency In the Church

Complacency – a feeling of quiet pleasure or security, often while unaware of some potential danger, defect, or the like; self-satisfaction or smug satisfaction with an existing situation, condition, etc.

Is the church complacent?  Over time, the soul can become content with lower standards.  Complacency and indifference can be dangerous in the life of a believer.

What are symptoms of complacency?

Satisfaction with the way things are and the rejection of things that might come to pass.

The Charge of Complacency:
We strive for the best of everything, best food, home, entertainment and pleasure.  This can lead to focus on self, comfort and happiness and less focus on the needs of others.  Does the spiritual state of our church, community and nation grieve or concern us?  Are we in danger of becoming lovers of self more than lovers of God?

The Curse of Complacency:
Amos 6 talks about judgement of the nation Israel.
Death
Destruction
Disgrace
Defeat

Humble obedience to God provides His blessings.

Complacency may lead to the death of many of our local churches.  Are our churches today doing more than existing?  Complacency robs the church of consecrated servants.  When people are more concerned with self more than church commitment, complacency sets in.  20% of the people in a church do 80% of the work and provide financial support.  Are we willing to set self aside and pick up a portion?

Cure For Complacency:
Understand the love and mercy of God
Someone had to pay the penalty - the wages of sin is death
Jesus paid our penalty - He delights to show mercy.  May we be stirred to think of and live for eternity.  May we ACT and not just THINK, may we accept the will of the Lord and live for Him.  May we hear and obey His commandments and directions.
